Would you like to know why working on the weekend sucks?
I’m sure you can probably figure it out, for the most part. And usually, working a shift on the weekend probably wouldn’t be that bad… when you get to sleep in your own bed at night. Or get to go out for drinks with everyone because you’re off at 7.
But when you have to work the weekend, and you work 12 hour shifts… when you have to drive an hour and a half to get to your hospital, so you can’t go home each night… when you’re on call, so there is a chance that you might not even get to sleep – there is nothing fun about any of that.
The worst part is always when everyone else you care about has weekends off. They plan all the fun, neat things for the weekends. Going out on the lake. Having cookouts. Derby parties. Meeting new people. You NEVER GET TO GO.
Sure, only working 3 days a week seems pretty awesome. But when it’s the 3 days that everyone else is having a great time, and you’re stuck miles away, sleeping alone in a hotel room, it really is just shit.
I would like to add to the end of this that I actually love my job. The 12 hour shifts don’t feel that long, I work with amazing people, and I’m thoroughly happy with what I do. I think Ultrasound is amazing, and interesting, and challenging, and most of the time quite fun. The physicians I deal with are nice, and the patients are usually pretty cool. So if I didn’t feel so horribly left out all the time, I think things would be ok.
